What is a Shelter?

Shelters are safe havens established and maintained by other players throughout the wasteland. They are physical objects rezzed in Second Life, powered by the Vortex Shelter script, and registered on the Mundus global tracker.

How Shelters Work

Simply wear your Vortex HUD and stand within 32 metres of an active Shelter. Your Sanity will slowly recover over time without any action required on your part. The amount of Sanity restored per hour depends on the configuration set by the shelter owner.

Sanity Recovery

Sanity is a vital stat that affects your character stability and effectiveness in the wasteland. When Sanity drops too low, serious consequences follow. Shelters provide a passive, ambient restoration of Sanity to all nearby survivors wearing the HUD, making them invaluable locations for players who have been through intense combat or prolonged isolation.

More Than Just Sanity

Shelters are social hubs. Many shelter owners also place useful devices nearby, such as:

  • NPC Vendors selling supplies and equipment
  • Crafting Stations and Cooking Fires
  • Chest deposits and resource nodes
  • Information boards and community signs

They are the gathering places of survivors — locations to rest, trade, plan, and form alliances.

Finding Shelters on Mundus

Active public Shelters appear on the Mundus page under the Shelters tab. A Shelter is listed only if all of the following conditions are met:

  • The owner has configured it as Public (IS_PUBLIC = TRUE in the script)
  • The parcel is open to all visitors (no access restrictions or pass requirements)
  • The owner has a positive Energy balance in their Vortex account
  • The in-world object has pinged the server within the last 10 minutes (i.e. it is currently rezzed)

Setting Up a Shelter (for owners)

To create a Shelter, rez any object in Second Life and place the Shelter.lsl script inside it. Edit the configuration variables at the top of the script before saving:

  • SANITY_RESTORE_PER_HOUR — Total Sanity points restored to each nearby player per hour
  • ENERGY_COST_PER_HOUR — Energy units deducted from your account balance per hour of operation
  • IS_PUBLIC — Set to TRUE to be listed on the Mundus Shelters page; FALSE to operate privately

Important: Your Vortex account must maintain a positive Energy balance for the shelter to remain active. When your Energy reaches zero, the shelter automatically stops working and is removed from the Mundus listing.

Energy Cost

Running a Shelter consumes Energy from your Vortex account each hour. Energy is a resource acquired through gameplay and can be monitored on your Vortex profile page. The exact hourly cost is configurable by the shelter owner (minimum 1 Energy per hour). Plan accordingly to keep your shelter operational for your community.
