Vortex 3D Text & Neon Sign Generator
The Vortex 3D Text & Neon Sign Generator is a state-of-the-art WebGL 3D typography workstation and Collada (.DAE 1.4.1) mesh generator created for Second Life, OpenSim, and virtual world creators. It extrudes custom 3D vector text, synthesises neon tube glow effects, builds architectural backplates, and partitions models into 3 distinct material faces for seamless in-world customization.
1. 3-Face Second Life Material Architecture
Second Life meshes require distinct material names inside the Collada document to enable individual face selection and texturing in the Firestorm build tool. Vortex Text Studio automatically splits all generated 3D signs into 3 strict material slots:
| SL Face Index | Material Name | Description | In-World Capabilities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Face 0 | Material_Front | Front letter cap | Neon emissive glow, fullbright, glossy foil, carbon |
| Face 1 | Material_Sides | Bevel & extrusion walls | Dark rubber, brushed chrome, matte metal casing |
| Face 2 | Material_Backplate | Backing panel / glass | Transparent acrylic glass, wireframe conduit, brackets |
---
2. Land Impact (LI) Optimization & Geometry Decimation
Keeping Land Impact below 1.0 LI is crucial for Second Life club marquees and shopfronts. Vortex Text Studio provides granular polygon control:
- ▸Curve Segments: Adjust curve resolution from 1 (sharp low-poly) to 8 (ultra-smooth curves). Keeping segments between 3 and 4 produces immaculate visual fidelity while keeping total triangle count under 2,500 tris.
- ▸Physics Optimization: When importing the generated
.dae mesh into Firestorm, choose Lowest or Bounding Box in the Physics tab to achieve a physics weight of under 0.36.
3. Backplate Mounting Options
The studio offers 10 procedural mounting styles:
- 01Transparent Acrylic Glass: Modern sign with 4 stainless standoff chrome corner bolts.
- 02Neon Wire Conduit: Realistic glass tubing backing with industrial wall brackets.
- 03Cyberpunk Chamfered Panel: Angled futuristic backboard with carbon bevels.
- 04Rounded Capsule / Pill: Classic 80s neon diner and retro arcade sign backer.
- 05Futuristic Hexagon: Sci-fi faction crest signboard.
- 06Hanging Double Chains: Ceiling mount rigging for boutique and nightclub entrances.
4. Animated Neon Flickering & RGB LSL Scripts
The generator includes production-grade LSL scripts utilizing llSetLinkPrimitiveParamsFast with PRIM_GLOW, PRIM_FULLBRIGHT, and PRIM_COLOR:
// Realistic Neon Buzz & Startup Flicker LSL Engine
integer FACE_FRONT = 0;
vector COLOR_NEON = <1.0, 0.0, 0.5>; // Hot Pink Neon
default
{
state_entry()
{
llSetTimerEvent(0.08);
}
timer()
{
float r = llFrand(1.0);
if (r > 0.88)
{
// Sudden realistic flicker dip
llSetLinkPrimitiveParamsFast(LINK_THIS, [
PRIM_GLOW, FACE_FRONT, 0.0,
PRIM_FULLBRIGHT, FACE_FRONT, FALSE
]);
}
else
{
// Vibrant neon burn
float glow = 0.25 + llFrand(0.12);
llSetLinkPrimitiveParamsFast(LINK_THIS, [
PRIM_GLOW, FACE_FRONT, glow,
PRIM_FULLBRIGHT, FACE_FRONT, TRUE,
PRIM_COLOR, FACE_FRONT, COLOR_NEON, 1.0
]);
}
}
}
```
5. 1-Click Second Life In-World Import
- 01Design & Extrude: Type your text, select a vector font, choose your backplate style, and tweak material colors.
- 02Export Mesh: Click Export .DAE Mesh to save the multi-face Collada file.
- 03Upload in Firestorm: Navigate to Build > Upload > Model (.dae). In the Physics tab, select Lowest. Click Calculate weights & fee, then Upload.
- 04Texture Faces: Rez the mesh in-world, check Select Face in the build menu, and apply custom textures or drop the generated Neon LSL script into the object contents!
